You would be surprised at the number of teens who beg their parents to shop for electric guitars. Many teens dream of being center stage in a popular rock band. Many parents eventually give in and agree to shop for electric guitars. Sadly, after teens see the hard work that goes into mastering electric guitars many of these teen dream axes end up sitting in the corners of bedrooms gathering dust.

However, there are exceptions. Teens that are serious about playing electric guitars will dig in and overcome any barriers that stand in their way of mastering the musical instrument. One of the biggest barriers to overcome is understanding that learning to play the guitar doesn’t come overnight. Many people who are masters of electric guitars seem to play effortlessly. Teens that understand that these musicians have years of work under their belts will be more likely to dig in and tackle the challenge of learning, too. Teens that do put in the time to learn are true music lovers and/or musicians at heart. Teens who think they should play like Clapton or Hendrix after a few weeks will probably end up putting their electric guitars down to pursue other hobbies.

Electric guitars may be a rite of passage for many youth. But, just like any new endeavor, it either “clicks” or it does not. If you are a parent who has a teen begging for an electric guitar, you would be wise to shop for inexpensive electric guitars until you see if your teen has what it takes to stick with it. If they do have what it takes you can upgrade their guitar. If they don’t, well, chalk it up to experience. You are sure to hear of a teen in your extended family that will probably soon want to try their hand at electric guitars. Simply sell your teen’s dusty guitar to that family.
