Having a sense of rhythm is essential if you want to play the drums. You will be the one that has to keep the beat for the entire band. Many people learn drums on a drum pad or by using an electronic drum kit. They take up less space than drums and they are generally cheaper than investing in drums. Your house mates will also tolerate the time you allot to practicing more because electronic drum kits and drum pads are not as loud. However, if you have a full set of drums, go for it! No one should stand in the way of a person and their music. If you are a total newbie when it comes to drums, you may want to invest in instructional videos or take drum lessons. Both videos and lessons can go far in teaching you common beats. If you have the talent you can progress to more challenging beats. If you do decide to take drum lessons it is important that you are honest with your teacher from the beginning. Tell him what type of music you want to play. Are you interested in rock? Country? Jazz? If so, it is important that you find a teacher that will hone in on that area of drumming. Ask for one lesson only -- to start. That way you will be able to see if the teacher is on the same page as you are. If he is not, go on until you find a teacher that can teach you the drums in a way that you are comfortable. |
